      SOLD DEAD WIFE'S EFFECTS

R H Smith Holds Public Auction at Hotel in Smyrna, Del.
Special to the New York Times

WILMINGTON, Del. Sept. 24. -- The personal effects of his second wife, now dead, were sold publicly by R. Hopper Smith, widower, aged 72, formerly Sheriff of Queen Anne County, Md., in front of a hotel in Smyrna, Del., yesterday. Smith recently married Margaret C. Bailey, a wealthy widow, aged 68, whose two sons, Frank and Daniel, attempted to have her declared insane. Frank Baily lives at 938 Hudson Street, Hoboken, N. J.

The aged widower, who now occupies the Bailey home in Smyrna, sold among other things a box labeled "gray shroud." It had contained the garment in which his second wife was buried.

The sale attracted a crowd. Among the household goods the framed portraits of the dead wife were conspicuous. A woman friend of the wife became so indignant that she appropriated one of the pictures and sent it to the family. A certificate of marriage of Smith's second wife to her first husband, Francis Bradbury of Elkton, Md., was put up and sold, as were also family Bibles, one containing a complete family record. A Prayer Book given to Mrs. Bailey by her uncle, the late Rev. John A. Roche, and so inscribed, went to the highest bidder. The shroud box was offered with a pair of blankets.

When a handsome book was returned to a relative of the dead wife it was opened at a paragraph which read: "Honest loss is preferable to shameful gain."

This was written by the donor, the Rev. Mr. Roche, to his niece.

      MOTHER WEDS; BALKS SONS.

They Vainly Attempted to Have Aged Woman Declared Insane
Special to The New York Times

WILMINGTON, Del., Sept. 9 -- The town of Smyrna, Del., is agitated over an effort made by two sons of a wealthy woman to have her declared insane in order to prevent her getting married. The attempt, which was learned today, was futile, the couple slipping away to Philadelphia and there being wedded.

The bride is Mrs. Margaret C. Bailey, aged 68, whose first husband left over $60,000, and R. Hopper Smith, aged 72, who is also rich. It is the latter's third matrimonial venture.

The woman's sons are Frank Bailey of Hoboken, N. J., and Daniel C Bailey of Smyrna. They opposed the match vigorously and had a Delaware lawyer engage Dr. Davies of the Delaware Sate Hospital Insane Asylum to examine their mother, but the doctor was not convinced of her insanity.
