PAGE 9-10 Have you ever dates like this? - "13 January 1709/10", This is not a date which attempts to reveal a Dec-Jan date. It appears because the "Old Style" calendar was superseded in 1752 by the Gregorian (New Style) calendar. Actually it was 1752 when an Act of Parliament passed "the day following 2 September 1752" was called "14 September". Concurrently, the beginning of the legal year was changed from 25 March to the 1st of January. As early as 1700, other European counties adopted the Gregorian calender, with the year beginning January 1st.

Thus, it became the custom in England and its colonies to give two dates for the period intervening between 1 January and 25 March, as 13 January 1709/10. The day following 24 March 1709/10 was 25 March 1710.
      The following chart shows the months: 1mo. = Mar, 2mo. = Apr, 3mo.= May, 4mo. = Jun, 5 mo. = Jul, 6mo. = August, 7mo. = Sep, 8mo = Oct, 9mo = Nov, 10mo. = Dec, 11mo. = Jan, 12mo = Feb.

The Friends added to the confusion by designating months by numbers instead of by names. January was the 11th month, February the 12th month.
